I've been in a gushy mood lately, I suppose that's what happens when you're in the midst of finishing 3 versions of a sweet love story (Hana Kimi), and I've been rewatching Escaflowne while I'm at work-- what a fantastic series!!-- so I guess this was kind of the byproduct. It began as a warm up piece to get used to my tiny wacom again (we use giant Intuos's at work) and turned into something I'm really happy with.
(Brief spoilers)
I always wondered what happened between the time that Van swooped up Hitomi from Zaibach and when they end up back in Fanelia. This is my guess-- I mean, they had to land at some point. That's why he's wearing Hitomi's jacket-- he tore up his own shirt shortly before going to save her and I thought he might be chilly. Hee. (end spoilers).
I have no idea why Hitomi is blue. I did the sketch in the blue and roan colors, and when I tried to change her to roan as well it just didn't work as well.
I like this piece. Hooray for revisiting the classics!
Photoshop, I have no idea how many hours because I worked on it back and forth while I worked on a trade as well.
Entirely drawn/shaded with the 3 pt brush.
I like the two different colours. It could also symbolize that even though they're living in two different worlds they are still very much in love with each other...so this is sort of like showing ones spirit meeting the others in the opposite world and sharing a tender moment...
or mabey I'm just nuts lol
And Van seems to tear his shirts a lot in that show XD I wonder where he keeps his stash of spares.

Thank you! ^_________^ Escaflowne is a classic, it's so timeless you could pick it up any time. If you have the means, I highly recommend rewatching it.
I actually thought about symbolism like that too. Last year before Anime North I actually started a VH piece with that sort of symbolism. I couldn't get the angle right though, so I stopped working on it.
Van tears or loses his shirt a lot in that show indeed, not that it's a bad thng. I theorize that when he's somewhere like Asturia or the Crusader, he has a bunch of shirts. But at the end of Escaflowne he literally leaves it all behind for Hitomi. I can't remember but I think he even ditches his gloves. Oh man, I can't wait to finish the series... I know I'm totally going to cry again.
